D&H Adirondack branch memories.
This web page reflects my years of research and personal accounts of growing up on the Adirondack branch of the D&H railroads Adirondack Sub, The D&H had a local freight switch out International Papermill in Corinth, six days a week Monday through Saturday. The paper mill I was critical to the D&H's is business model and provided thousands of freight cars annually of goods and finished paper products. The National Lead ore train ran from 1941 until the mines closing in 1982. This traffic was said to have paid the D&H's payroll every month while in operation.
The majority of traffic on the D&H was bridge line tonnage, however there was a significant amount of online traffic. The Adirondack branch provided a substantial amount of this online traffic. The two major industries on this branch line were the International paper company mill a Corinth and the National Lead titanium mine on the tahawus brand, both added significant amounts of carloads right up until the day of the purchased by CP rail
SC was the symbol used for locals on the 3rd and 4th subs. Originally there was a Saratoga Div and a Champlain Div, combined in1954. The combined Divisions were then called the Saratoga-Champlain Div, hence the symbol SC. The two divisions shared the same roster for train and engine crews, and the SC jobs could be assigned anywhere on either division.
